Deck Painting

“A good painter cleans to paint; they do not paint to clean.” This guiding principle shapes how BUFO approaches every deck refurbishment.

We begin by inspecting the deck for damaged boards, loose nails, and other issues, and perform necessary repairs within the scope of a professional painter’s trade to ensure a smooth, stable surface.

Next, prepare the deck by washing it thoroughly with soapy water and a stiff brush. Deck refurbishment typically falls into one of three situations, and each requires a different approach:

  • New, untreated timber: Start with a coarse sanding to open the grain, then apply Sikkens Cetol BL Tannin & Oil Remover to draw oils and tannins to the surface before proceeding with finish products.

  • Weathered timber with old coatings: Sand back to bare timber and remove all previous coatings to ensure proper adhesion of the new finish.

  • Timber with a sound existing finish or uniformly weathered timber: Light sanding is usually unnecessary; we typically can proceed directly to the next step.

We then go back in to clean again, removing any loose debris and sanding dust (generally all caught in our Festool vacuum as we sand).

Next comes colour selection. Sikkens offer 60 colour choices! Application is then done with a decking roller for even coverage and hand-cut edges with a brush for crisp, accurate lines.
